The Man Who Spoke Snakish - Historical Novel Society

In The Man Who Spoke Snakish, Estonian writer Andrus Kivirähk weaves a melancholy, often brutal, tale of the last gasp of an ancient folkloric culture. He describes a people who live entirely in the forest, keep wolves to ride (like horses) and milk (like cows), command wild deer and goats to come to slaughter, and speak the language of their friends the snakes. It is this ability that offers the people dominion over the wolves, deer, and goats, and the forest in general.

i stumbled across this book on behance of all places... an illustrator was so taken by the book that they decided to illustrate it... i made a note of it... i am interested in the idea that indigenous peoples had, in many instances, the right relationship with the nature... spiritual, respectful... i am, as many other are, nostalgic for this point of view, even if i never lived it fully myself... it seems like a better idea... a better way to be... aggressive modernity has driven most close to nature societies out of existence... or corralled them carefully where they can do no harm... i sometimes wonder if we could adopt local strategies that are more reflective of this cosmic view?...

we participated in the "we ain't buy'n it" campaign over the thanksgiving holiday... we didn't buy anything from amazon that wasn't already in the pipeline... we already don't buy from target and home depot... we are also committed to only buying from amazon when we can't find it elsewhere... i bought a new battery powered snow shovel from lowes for example... i could have gotten it for a bit less on amazon but lowes is less evil... i did buy some mulching hay from amazon, but only after trying two different local places... i bought some new leggings and socks from HUE, which were originally offered to me on amazon... i bought straight from the company website instead... it won't get here as quickly, but amazon won't get any piece of the sale either...

anxiety is plaguing me lately... anxiety about my health (not for any specific reason), about the political situation, about loosing my mojo because i am getting ever older...

Today, libertarian conservative writer George Will noted in the Washington Post: “Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth seems to be a war criminal. Without a war. An interesting achievement.” Will went on to refer to the Trump administration as a “moral slum.”
