fiona escapes, handsome barista couple, new dress, war and peace: fossil fuels and renewables

yesterday i was grateful for a new dress…
today i am looking forward to yoga with maryanne…

not much of a photo walk this morning… had to take dogs for a walk instead of letting them out… fiona got out through the bottom of the chain link fence one nature work crew left… though i think they didn’t think it was unsecured… fiona is an opportunist… she doesn’t dig holes but she sure takes advantage of any holes she finds that she could squeeze herself through… when i realized she wasn’t there i started to walk out to the street to look for her, calling her name… as i got even with the front porch, there she was at the front door… tail wagging… “i was trying to come home”… thank whatever cosmic powers there are that kept her from going far or through to the other block… i am debating what to say to one nature and whether to have them come back and secure the fence… i will have to inspect the rear yard fence closely for gaps that need to be closed… if any… there were a couple of spots i was mildly concerned about…
s… lovely young barista… walks by... she is lovely in lots of ways… pretty… shapely… not skinny but not overweight either… just right… i envy her body, not just because of her youth… i would love to look like her… my male/female gaze is engaged too though she’s not provocatively dressed… she is also refined… seems certain she comes from an upper middle class family at minimum… that she’s had a good education and took advantage of it… i am guessing she is pretty smart… and personable… she and j, her co-worker, seem to really enjoy each other… they have merry chats… s has a boyfriend… may even be married… or engaged… i could see her and j as a couple… a pretty handsome one at that… i don’t know if j has a significant other…
i am struggling to find a rhythm… had lots of obligations when i got back last week… want to get back to yoga, but it’s proving to be hard… as the nike ad goes… just do it… i will… i will…
my new dress came from BR…

i am wearing it today... feel really good in it… yummy feeling… its hard to describe adequately how much i love wearing dresses… the maxier the better, though i have a few midi and mini dresses that i look pretty good in too…
i keep thinking about a rebecca solnit essay i read a few days back… she makes the case that oil is war and violence, while renewables are peace and, one would expect, prosperity?… renewables are peace because they are not scarce and they are widely distributed… it is difficult to corner the market… they can be replenished or are self replenishing or, in the case of solar and wind power… driven by a giant source of, as far as we are concerned, perpetual energy… the sun shines at all times and in all places… though climate can make it more or less from place to place… the sun has shined for billions of years… it will shine for billions of years more… the sun’s death horizon is far out… if life is still around when it becomes unreliable, will it have figured out how to navigate between the stars to a new, younger sun?…
we have solar panels on our house… did that a long time ago… we have a hybrid car… i am wondering if we should go all electric… ween ourselves completely off of fossil fuels in every way we can think of… it is much harder for the few to control solar and wind power… much harder for supplies to be shut off because of war… by depending on fossil fuels we depend on producers whose interests don’t always align with ours… even though we extract and refine more fossil fuel than we consume, we are beholding to the world oil market and we pay world market prices… so when the strait of hormuz shuts down… we suffer…
what would an economy look like that runs on renewables?… how would capitalism work without scarcity?… would power based on enormous wealth still be possible if scarcity isn’t a part of the equation?… i wonder…

Krugman goes on to make a major point: “Think about how much America’s position in the world has been weakened, not just by apparent failure to subdue a fourth-rate power, but by the fact that everybody now knows that you cannot trust anything, cannot trust any promises the United States makes, you cannot count on the United States carrying through with promises, with threats, not just promises, but threats are also incredible in the sense of not being all credible, and that the default assumption should be that anything that this administration says is a lie.”
